My Experience as a Volunteer
“Those who don’t live to serve, don’t truly live.” —Mother Teresa of Calcutta
Everything began a few months ago when my aunt Verónica, who is part of the Misioneras de la Eucaristía congregation, invited me to participate in volunteer work at a migrant shelter. I gladly accepted her invitation, as I had been interested in volunteering for quite some time. I packed my suitcase with the essentials and set off for Jalisco. I arrived in the city with no expectations, only thinking that there would be a lot of work—and I was right. From the very first day, I became involved in kitchen and reception activities.
Later, I was assigned a list of people to visit and conduct socio-economic studies. It was a very enriching experience, as it relates to my career as a social worker. Listening to their lifestyles and stories allowed me to connect with them and appreciate all that I have. Walking through the streets of Cerro del 4, accompanied by people who gave me their valuable time and always greeted me with a smile, made me feel truly fortunate.
In addition, spending time with the migrants—women, men, and children—through brief conversations, games, and drawings, made me realize how valuable it is to serve others.
I am also grateful for the time shared with the staff and volunteers at the Migrant Shelter, who were always there to guide me. And personally, I want to thank Father Alberto Ruiz, who was present from the very beginning—attentive to my needs and always taking me to events or places that I found interesting.
Participating in volunteer work is an experience everyone should try at least once in their life. Serving others without expecting anything in return makes you feel so good emotionally, and spiritually, it feels as though you are contributing a small grain to your salvation.
